As I pack and prepare for my flight to New Orleans, I pause to think about what I want to get done over the next few days. What learning or advocacy is most important to me right now? I have the opportunity to tackle nearly every topic on my desk through thought sessions, workshops and even dinner conversation with colleagues. A review of the sessions on the website has whet my appetite in many areas.
My passion this year is clear. The political landscape of our country is changing quickly. With the confirmation of Betsy Devos, the unstable status of ESSA, and changing rules and regulations come at us with great frequency, my priority will be to learn all I can about this changing environment in which I must lead. Starting with an email sent out by AASA’s Noelle Ellerson about options available, I am booking my calendar with the session: Federal Education Policy in a Post-ESEA Era, which is scheduled for Friday morning. Unfortunately, I may arrive too late to go to the Federal Relations Lunch, but I do highly recommend it if you are able to attend (you do have to preregister for this luncheon).
Also on Friday, there is a session on The Third Branch: Supreme Court and Schools– it looks like another important session to assist with my focus for this conference. It is followed by a session on Transgender Policy. On Thursday, there is a session offered on State Policy 2017: What to Expect, What to Plan For, as well as an opportunity for AASA Meet and Greet.
Whatever your focus is for the conference this year, take time to look through the schedule and map out your days to maximize your learning. And don’t forget the social aspect- networking is a major plus each year as I attend the NCE!
Time to pack again- see you in NO.
