Today is the Day (Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026)
Technically speaking, things began yesterday with registration and one of the conference's most inspiring traditions—the graduation ceremonies for AASA’s Aspiring Superintendents Academies. More than 180 aspiring leaders crossed the stage, each stepping forward to serve their communities in one of the most challenging and meaningful roles in public education. Their commitment and courage were inspiring and served as a powerful reminder that the future of our schools is in capable hands.
A Day of Anticipation
Today holds special significance for me.
I am honored to be one of the FOUR finalists for National Superintendent of the Year, and later this afternoon, during the general session, the winner will be announced.
For those wondering—no, we do not know who it will be. Each finalist is instructed to prepare an acceptance speech, and we learn at the same moment everyone else does, standing on stage before thousands of our peers. AASA certainly knows how to build suspense!
What I do know is that there is no wrong choice. Roosevelt, Demetrus, and Sonya are extraordinary leaders doing incredible work in their communities. Spending time with them has been energizing and affirming. I’ve learned from each of them and am grateful to stand alongside such dedicated colleagues.
The Power of Our Professional Community
One of the most humbling parts of this experience has been the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the country. Walking through the conference and having people offer congratulations—even those I’ve never met—has been deeply meaningful.
The superintendency can sometimes feel isolating. We carry immense responsibility and make decisions that impact students, staff, and communities every day. But gatherings like NCE remind us that we are not alone. We are part of a national community of leaders united by a shared purpose: to serve our students and strengthen our public education promise.
Learning and Looking Ahead
Despite the excitement of the afternoon ahead, I am looking forward to spending the morning learning alongside all of you. Sessions focused on supporting students and families, navigating emerging issues like artificial intelligence, and strengthening partnerships with higher education are exactly why we gather—to learn from one another and return home better equipped to serve.
Later today, we will celebrate State Superintendents of the Year from across the country and recognize one national leader. It will be a moment of pride for our profession.
But regardless of the outcome, this experience has already been a gift. Events like NCE remind us why we do this work. They renew our sense of purpose, strengthen our connections, and inspire us to keep moving forward.
Today is the day—and it is only the beginning of what promises to be an energizing and inspiring conference for all of us.
