Nearing Century Mark, AASA’s Century Club Keeps Tradition Alive

The Century Club 100, which was the original governing board of AASA, is believed to the oldest continuing tradition associated with the AASA National Conference on Education.

Formed in 1925, the Century Club will convene its members for the 95th time in the Balboa/Mission Hills Room at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina on Thursday, Feb. 13, for a noon luncheon. They will exchange ideas about current topics in education and hear from an invited speaker,  Sean Covey, president of FranklinCoveyEducation.

The primary sponsor of the 2020 Century Club luncheon is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Membership is limited to two active superintendents from each state nominated by that state. New members are chosen by the two existing members when one member decides to retire.

“We are attempting to update our membership role and would gladly welcome new members as needed from any state,” says Tom Shelton, the group’s executive secretary and treasurer. “We are inviting all state association executive directors to strengthen our collaboration and build our membership.”

Members also will elect a new leadership slate. In addition to Shelton, a leadership consultant who lives in Lexington, Ky., current officers include president Jerry Thacker, superintendent of Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp. in Mishawaka, Ind.; 1st vice president Chuck Ledbetter, superintendent in Pike Road, Ala.; and the 2nd vice president Jule Walker, deputy state superintendent of operations in Montana.
