Stipends for Graduate Study in School Administration Awarded to Seven Educators Aspiring for the Superintendency

Seven graduate students in educational administration are receiving scholarship awards to apply toward their studies.

The $1,500 scholarships are named after each of AASA’s executive directors over the past 100-plus years.

The announcement of the 2023 recipients, all working in administration in K-12 education, was made at the ASSA national conference in San Antonio, Texas. The winners are:

Maria De La Luz Bordanaro, deputy superintendent for human resources and student services, Oakley Union School District in Oakley, Calif. She is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership in social justice at California State College of the East Bay in Hayward, Calif. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from National University in Stockton, Calif.

William Eger, chief business officer with the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto, Calif. He is enrolled in an Ed.D. program at University of Pennsylvania. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Harvard and Penn, respectively.

Colleen E. Evens, dean of students with Community Consolidated School District 21 in Wheeling, Ill. She is a doctoral student in educational leadership at University of Southern California. She holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Hartford and a master’s from University of St. Thomas.

Michael A. Gebreslassie, assistant principal at Fremont High School in the Oakland Unified School District in California. He is working on a doctoral degree in educational leadership in social justice at California State College of the East Bay in Hayward, Calif. He holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Asmarar in Asmara, Eritrea and a master’s degree from University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba, Japan.

Rubi Y. Ortiz, director of multilingual learners with the West Chicago Elementary School District 33 in West Chicago, Ill. She is an Ed.D. student in educational leadership at National Louis University in Lisle, Ill. She holds a bachelor’s degree from North Central College and master’s from University of Phoenix and Dominican University.

Monica J. Ready, director of secondary education in Napa Valley Unified School District in Napa, Calif. She is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership in social justice at California State College of the East Bay in Hayward, Calif. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University and a master’s degree from Touro University in Vallejo, Calif.

Monica H. Thomas, Network 3 superintendent in Oakland Unified School District in California. She is working on a doctoral degree at University of California at Berkeley. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s from Stanford University.
