Future-Driven Leadership: Excitement for Day One of the AASA National Conference on Education

The anticipation is building! As I prepare to attend my first AASA National Conference on Education, I can already feel the excitement of what’s to come. The theme of this year’s conference—Future-Driven Leadership—perfectly captures the momentum of education today, and I’m eager to join respected superintendents from across the country as we learn, collaborate, and push the boundaries of what’s possible for our students and communities. The future of education is being shaped right now, and this conference provides the perfect space to embrace innovative thinking, bold decision-making, and transformational leadership.

Even before stepping into the Convention Center, I know the energy will be contagious. The AASA staff will be welcoming thousands of leaders, the Exhibit Hall will be buzzing with innovative solutions from AASA partners, and the sessions will be packed with forward-thinking ideas designed to shape the future of education. This gathering of leaders represents a collective commitment to ensuring that our schools are not just keeping up with change but driving it forward.

As a second-year superintendent and a first-time attendee, I knew I needed to make the most of this experience. To maximize my time, I carefully reviewed the sessions and crafted a plan that aligns with our district’s needs and priorities. (Pro tip: If you haven’t already, download the AASA Conference App—it’s the best way to stay organized and navigate all the incredible learning opportunities!)

Prioritizing STEM Leadership for a Future-Ready Education

Oakwood Schools has made STEM a central focus of our strategic plan, recognizing that future-driven leadership means equipping our students with the skills and mindsets needed for the careers of tomorrow. My involvement in the AASA Innovation for Transformation Consortium has been instrumental in shaping our vision. The Consortium has provided invaluable learning opportunities—through an in-person convening this Fall (and an upcoming one this Spring), virtual meetings, and the informal yet powerful connections I’ve built with other forward-thinking leaders.

That’s why I’m especially eager to attend the STEM Leadership: Students and Educators Shifting School Culture roundtable session. This session promises to explore how schools can foster a culture of innovation in STEM, a key priority for any district looking to prepare students for the rapidly evolving workforce. I look forward to gaining new strategies and perspectives to bring back to our district.

My First AASA Presentation: Future-Driven Community Engagement

Beyond attending sessions, I am both excited and nervous about a major milestone—my first time presenting at the AASA Conference! During a roundtable session on Launching a Comprehensive Community Engagement Plan, I’ll be sharing how, as a new superintendent, I worked with our team to develop a strategic approach to community engagement. We designed initiatives that foster two-way communication to help us learn, inform, and connect with our stakeholders.

Future-driven leadership isn’t just about technology and instruction—it’s about fostering strong relationships that empower our communities to be active partners in education. If you’re passionate about strengthening relationships with your school community, I’d love for you to attend my session and share your insights as well!

AI in Education: The Future is Now

Artificial Intelligence is one of the most transformative forces in education today, and as leaders, we must ensure we harness its potential thoughtfully and effectively. A future-driven leader must understand both the opportunities and challenges AI presents. I’m eager to attend AI-Powered Superintendent Solutions: Expert Insights on Overcoming District Challenges to hear from experts who are leading the charge on AI implementation in schools. As I continue to explore how AI can enhance leadership and instruction, this session will provide valuable perspectives and practical applications.

The Future of Our Education Workforce

While I know I need to pace myself (it’s only Day One!), I wouldn’t miss the Opening General Session: The Future of Our Education Workforce featuring Arizona State University’s Dean Carole Basile. As we grapple with national teacher shortages and shifts in the profession, this discussion will be critical in understanding how we can lead with vision and innovation to attract, support, and retain educators who will shape the future of learning.

Follow Along for More Future-Driven Insights!

The next few days will be filled with learning, collaboration, and inspiration. As superintendents, we are charged with leading our districts into the future with clarity, purpose, and adaptability. This conference is an opportunity to expand our thinking, build connections, and take actionable ideas back to our communities. I’ll be sharing key takeaways along with other AASA Bloggers, so be sure to follow along as we capture the most impactful moments of #NCE2025.

I can’t wait to get started to meet leaders across the Nation!
