The Horace Mann League recognized Michael A. Rebell and Jack McKay with awards during their inaugural conference on Democracy in Education in Charleston S.C. on Feb. 6.
Traditionally, these awards are made public at the AASA national conference each year.
The league’s Friend of Public Education was given to Rebell, executive director of the Center for Educational Equity, and a professor of law and educational practice at Teachers College, Columbia University,
Rebell is an experienced litigator and scholar in the field of education law. The center he leads promotes equity and excellence in education and seeks to overcome the gap in educational access and achievement between advantaged and disadvantaged students throughout the United States.
The Friend of the League honor was given to Jack McKay, who has come out of retirement to serve as interim executive director of the pro-public education organization. McKay retired two years ago as the Horace Mann League’s director after nearly three decades of service at the top.
Rather than its usual awards luncheon during the AASA event, the HML is co-hosting a reception with Superintendents Leadership Network, National Superintendents' Roundtable and Mid-American Association of School Superintendents. The reception will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, at the Marriott Warehouse Arts District Hotel.
