Susan Harkin, who is attending the AASA national conference from her base in suburban Chicago, will have the chance to travel in the next year to Central America, an excursion that definitely was not on her radar when she journeyed to San Antonio earlier this week.
Harkin, the superintendent of Community Unit School District 300 in Algonquin, Ill., was drawn randomly as the winner of the 2023 Lifetouch Memory Mission contest after she completed an application slip earlier in the conference. Her name was announced at the 3rd General Session of the AASA conference on Saturday.
Harkin will be offered the chance to join other educators, including a staff member from AASA headquarters, as volunteers on a school-rebuilding project taking place in Guatemala in January 2024.
