Seen & Heard Around the Conference: One Talented Performer on All Fields and Hot Book Sellers at the Conference

Talented in Words and Deeds

One of the youngest members of the reporting staff at this year’s AASA conference proved she carries assorted skills at a high level.

After logging a nine-hour workday Friday as a reporting intern for Conference Daily Online, Emma Siebold, a senior at Smithson Valley High School in Spring Branch, Texas, quickly switched attire to take to the playing field for her school’s varsity soccer team in a 2-0 victory in an evening match. Siebold scored the first goal and set up the second.

By 8 the next morning, she was back at the convention center with reporting tools in hand, ready to capture the key points in a session about teacher retention.

Siebold carries a bright future. She’s also editor in chief of her high school newspaper, The Valley Ventana.

The Hottest Sellers

Two of the conference’s keynote speakers proved to be the biggest draws at the AASA Conference Bookstore.

Alex Boyé and Stephen Covey sold 200 and 150 copies, respectively, of their published works during book signings following their speeches at the 1st and 2nd General Sessions, according to George Karamihas, serving his final year as manager of the conference’s bookstore operation.
