That wonderful musical wakeup call that greeted those arriving for the 2nd General Session of AASA’s national conference on Friday morning came courtesy of the talented student musicians at Chula Vista High School just outside San Diego.

The band, known as the House of Guitar, is one of the only steel-string acoustic guitar ensembles in the nation. About two dozen guitarists performed a set of a half dozen numbers.

Their appearance at the AASA conference was brought about by the Save the Music Foundation.

The House of Guitars is part of the Chula Vista High School’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts, a school within a school, and the only arts magnet program in the Sweetwater Union High School District.

In a pre-conference interview, Lucas Dominguez, the band’s director, said the student musicians had not previously performed at the San Diego Convention Center and never at an event with more than 3,500 registered participants.

“They are very excited and are practicing diligently to prepare for the performance,” Dominguez said.
